​Our 3rd place entry  “Climb” for the Cartrdge Art and Animation Contest alongside Created with fellow 3d artist/illustrator/graphic designer Sarah Doyle.
This animation shows little "Cubey" climbing through connected environments to reach the boss at the end. Fuelled by our love for classic RPG's and Adventure games with old school platformers.
I took charge of the 3D modelling, textures and rendering. Sarah was in charge of animation, sound design and concept art.
​We had two weeks to finish this, primarily working in the evenings alongside our other work. We decided to keep the design simple but striking, utilising a low poly style for the distinctive look while also keeping render times fast with our limited time and hardware.
When we started this project we wanted to expand on the ideas I used in my previous project "Islands".
Instead of independent environments this time, however we wanted to connect these separate areas and allow a simple character to travel through them.
This meant the landscapes had to be at a fixed perspective this time and required some extra complexity to allow the character to travel across them with some added obstacles and set pieces.​
Sarah sketched out a connected illustration of all the areas similar and mapped out the characters path, as well as the kind of props and obstacles we would need. 
I then quickly blocked the environments out in Maya with simple geometry a and camera test. This allowed us to experiment with the overall composition, perspective and pacing of the piece. These models would gradually replaced by more refined geometry
